Fall Fun

I would love fall so much more if it just wasn't so cold! It seems that there's lots of fun things to do this time of year. We took Kaitlynn, Carter and Isaac to see the Ringling Bros Circus. We haven't been since Kait was a baby. Marissa and Levi were home one weekend in October and we wanted to go to the Corn Maze but the weather was awful. Later in the month it was warmer and Ann took Carter, Brooklynn and Isaac. It was Ann's first time (she usually works on Saturdays). The corn was really tall this year and as always the courtyard is a lot of fun too.

Once again Carter and Jared played together at the Federation Duet Festival. And... once again they received a superior rating. This was Carter's 5th year. One of the duets was "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus", and they played it as part of the Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation as well.

The kids all had fun decorating honey cookies. My children remember us doing that most years when they were small and it's a tradition they want to continue.

We had a party at home on Halloween. Carter and I made carmel apples and we all tried to watch a movie (something Halloween-like, but not really scary). The movie we rented was scratched and iTunes froze up on the computer, but we had fun anyway. Cameron and Heidi stopped by with their girls. Cameron took 2nd place with the costume he wore to work (he should have won first). Not only was his costume great, but I think he stayed in character most of the day. Some of the people at the hospital where he works didn't even know it was him!

Little Lila in the Bowl

My Mom's parents owned Collier Furniture. In the store there was a crystal punch bowl. I'm not sure why, but my grandparents had the local photographer (Mr. Thorne) take Mom's picture in the punch bowl when she was six months old. When I was six months old, Mom borrowed the bowl from the family who had purchased it, and Mr. Thorne took my picture in it. By the time my oldest daughter, Ann was six months old there was a crack in the bowl and it was a family heirloom so her picture was taken by Mr. Thorne in a different bowl. Now my daughter Marissa's little one, Lila (named after my mother) is six months old and her picture was taken Saturday in a punch bowl. If you look carefully, you can see that all the babies are wearing the same bracelet.

Seattle Trip

This year Terry and Carter, along with Terry's brother Corey and his son, Jevan took a trip to Seattle Washington to see the Boston Red Sox play. Carter got his first airplane ride, saw the ocean (even took a boat tour of the harbor), the Space Needle, visited the Hard Rock Cafe, AND watched the Red Sox. Carter got his picture taken with 2 of the players that they happened to see outside the ballpark. It was a GREAT trip!

Summer and Beyond

We had a family picture taken during Cousin Camp. This year I had a picture of just the adults. Why? No one really likes getting ready for a family picture so this way the picture won't outdate as quickly since it's the grandchildren that change so fast or get added to the family. Of course, Kaitlynn could change things too.

We had a busy summer. Marissa, Levi, Ryan, Heidi, Isaac, Brooklynn, Cameron and Kairi all had birthdays. Isaac is now 6, and Brooklynn and Kairi are 8. Jenna, Ryan and Ava moved back to Vernal. School is in session again. Carter is in 6th grade, Brooklynn is in 2nd and Isaac is in Pre 1st. Terry, Kaitlynn, Carter, Isaac and myself went to see the Ringling Brothers Circus last week. Carter is playing Fall Ball. Most games he's pitching 1-2 innings as well as catching and playing 2nd base. Yesterday Jenna and I canned peaches. We've been eating lots of them fresh and barbequeing outside while the weather is nice.

Pismo Beach

In May I took a trip to Pismo Beach, California with my mom. Mom and Dad lived there when Dad was serving in the U.S. Army. For many years now, they've traveled back to enjoy Pismo and the surrounding area each year, but were unable to the last 2 years before Dad passed. Mom wanted to make one last trip so she asked if I would like to go along. We flew from SLC to LA and then to Santa Barbara. From there we drove north to Pismo. On our way, we stopped in Buelton at a place called Pea Soup Andersons where I had some of the best seafood pasta ever (as much fresh seafood as pasta). It's a quaint little Danish restaurant and gift shop that first opened it's doors in 1924. Owned by Anton and Juliette Andersen. The place is famous for it's pea soup (no, I didn't try any) that was first made by Juliette who was an expert chef from the east of France.

Our next stop was Pismo Beach. I had been there once or twice when I was a teenager but I don't think I appreciated the beauty that surrounded me. This time, like a child I was in awe of the ocean. I felt as if I was standing on the edge of the earth, and I was mesmerized by it's grandeur.

While we were there, we drove up to Avila Beach and had dessert at the Olde Port Inn Restaurant at the end of the Harford Pier.

Another day we drove to the Hearst Castle.

It's more like a museum. Before going, I got on the internet and read about William Hearst, the castle and the artifacts. During our tour, our guide ask a question and wanted the first person who could answer it to shout out the answer. "Who was Millicent Willson?" Several people made guesses but were wrong. I'm not a real loud person, but I finally shouted out, "She was his wife." For the correct answer, I received the miniature pink rose from our guide's lapel.

At the castle, I was once again struck by the beauty of it and the surrounding area. The castle was 28 years in the making and was actually never completed. It's an architectural wonder. William Hearst was an avid collector of art and artifacts. He combined lots of different styles from many time periods and somehow made they all work together. This Egyptian sculpture dates back to the time of Moses.

For me, the castle was one of the highlights of our trip. Unfortunately, you have to see it firsthand to really appreciate it.

On our way to and from the Castle, we passed Morro Bay where this huge volcanic plug (581 feet high) is located just off shore from Morro Bay.

As we drove up and down the coast, there were miles and miles of vineyards. Of course, we were in Wine Country. Mom said years ago there were miles and miles of different produce. So, what are we going to eat when all they grow is grapes?

Another one of my favorite places was Solvang. It's a Scandinavian city with lots of flavor and atmosphere. Mom and Dad always brought home fudge to everyone from here. I also tasted gelato for the first time.

Mom and I had lots of fun walking up and down the old part of Pismo, taking in the sites and smells, the birds, the flowers, the shops, the people and eating lots of good food (especially seafood).

Thanks Mom for taking me on this trip!!! Also, thank you to Jenna for coming home and holding down the fort while I was gone. By the way, we had such a great time that we decided we need to go "one more time".

Pirate Ship

Many of you on my street have watched the progress of an amazing fort/ pirate ship being built. I've watched with particular interest because the builder was once one of my little Mia Maids. Dacia is now a mother of 3 boys. After pricing playground equipment she decided she could build her own, but even the materials were outrageously expensive. So..... trips to D.I., online shopping, along with Dacia's fabulous imagination have produced something far better than any kit. Spring Break

For part of spring break we decided to take Kait, Carter and Isaac to Salt Lake. We went to the Children's Museum and then to Temple Square. Needless to say, we had a lot of fun.

Lila Rose

March 1 Marissa and Levi added a new member to their family, Lila Rose. Terry and I made a quick trip to Salt Lake to see her and then I went back a few days later to help out for a week. I gave Finn his first haircut while I was there. He even climbed up on my lap and let me read to him. Lila is a very calm baby and I spent lots of time cuddling with her. Kaitlynn came to Salt Lake and spent her birthday with me and Marissa's family. She made her first solo trip from SLC to Vernal and back again to pick me up. She and I did some shopping while she was in town. It was a great week!!!

Carter and I had a birthday on February 17th. Carter turned 11 and I turned.... one year older than last year.

Jenna and Ava visited for a week while Ryan went on the annual snowmobile trip with the men in his family. Jenna had a birthday while she was visiting (February 10th) so we got to celebrate with her.

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words, so here it is. Isaac is now missing 3 front teeth. He hates to have Grandpa pull them, but he would wait forever. This morning when he thought he couldn't eat breakfast because his tooth hurt, it was time.... again. First there were tears and then a big smile!

Pinewood Derby

Any of you who have a Cub Scout will understand the significance of the Pinewood Derby. It's a time honored tradition between Cub Scouts and dads and/ or grandfathers. Each year Carter's car has been a different design and paint job. This year (just like last year) Carter took 3rd place, so he came away with a smile.

Birthday Time

Ann's birthday is December 19th and Terry's is December 28th. They both think December is not the best time to have a birthday because everyone is so focused on Christmas. Terry always claims that people just save part of your Christmas to give you on your birthday, so this year I just assured him that's what I had done (though I don't think he can complain after the iPad he got for Christmas). He is, however, still waiting for the oatmeal cake I always make for his birthday.

As usual, Christmas was a busy time but we enjoyed having family time together. Jenna and Ava came and stayed a week before Christmas and then Ryan joined us just before Christmas. Thanks Ryan for sharing your girls!

Federation Duet Festival

Carter and his cousin Jared played together in the duet festival and received a superior rating. This was their second year playing together and they both had enough points to receive a trophy (which takes at least 3 years to earn). Good job guys!

Fall Fun

We've been busy since the last post so here's a quick update. We've spent days at the ball park while Carter played "Fall Ball" (baseball in the fall). His team won their league tournament and they were each given a hat (the one he's sporting in the picture) instead of a trophy. Now we're watching him play basketball on Thursdays and Saturdays.

We've been to the Bluebell Corn Maze which is always a highlight of the season.

We've carved pumpkins and made and decorated the traditional honey cookies. Terry tells us he doesn't "do" pumpkin carving, but this year Isaac's pumpkin was huge and he and I couldn't get the lid out once it was cut so we recruited Terry and then he stayed to scoop out the insides.

Carter and his duet partner (and cousin) Jared recently played 2 piano duets and scored a superior! They worked for months to achieve this.

USU and DOPL

Two weeks ago we were in Logan getting ready to leave Kaitlynn on a new adventure.... college at USU. Yesterday she officially became a licensed Pharmacy technician!!! Her license hasn't arrived yet, but you can find it on the Utah DOPL site.

Peaches and More

I bought a box of peaches from Grand Junction and instead of canning them I decided to just have fun. I've made two different kinds of peach ice cream, peach pie and tomorrow I think it will be peach muffins. We've also enjoyed just slicing them and eating them with cream and/ or sugar. I've also been trying new recipes like Sweet and Sour Chicken, Banana Chip Muffins and two kinds of breadsticks. Some recipes we've liked better than others, but either way it's been fun in the kitchen trying new things. Hey, anything that makes the kitchen more fun is always good.

While everyone was home for Cousin Camp we did family pictures. Heidi is our photographer and we always love the work she does. She did lots of individual shots and small family groups and then for the big family group pictures, she set it up and then her brother Talon clicked the camera. Thanks Heidi.... and Talon. Cousin Camp

We had our annual Caldwell "Cousin Camp" a few weeks ago. It was a lot of fun, and this year I took a lot of pictures. The carnival is always a favorite activity as well as crafts. This year we had a new "surprise" activity, and I think it was everyone's favorite. We had a huge blow up slide that even the grownups enjoyed!

Projects

Sometimes I have a hard time finishing projects that I start. I finally decided to paint the stair rails in our house (they're metal and unsightly). Have you ever tried spray painting in the house? I carefully masked it off and put up what I thought was plenty of tarps. But guess what? It goes EVERYWHERE. So this is one job I haven't finished. Terry tells me there's a better way to do it but so far I haven't tackled the rest of the project. So here's the before and after shot all in one. The "before" is the railing in the foreground and the "after" is in the background. The one I painted brown looks great if I do say so myself, but for now maybe I'll just consider it eclectic.

Clear back in May I started new flannel quilts for Carter and Isaac. I measured, cut, sewed and then I spent 2 full days just putting the quilts on the frames and tying them, and then I tucked them away to bind later. Well, "later" just barely got here. I don't know why I dread making bias binding and then actually binding, but I seem to. Anyway, last week I finally finished the quilts (I'm going to use them as bedspreads) and made pillow cases. Now I just need to paint their bookcase headboards (or get Terry to) and then I'm going to paint their bedroom. Carter is anxious to have the new quilts on their beds (they're very soft and he picked out the flannel) but I told him it would have to wait until everything is done. Hopefully the rest of the project won't have to wait so long.

Roommate Reunion

Thirty five years ago I was attending BYU. I was living in Heritage Halls with five other girls (only one of which I knew before). We cooked together, we cleaned together, we laughed and cried together. I haven't seen most of them in many, many years. Last Saturday all six of us got together in Vernal. It was a great day. Although our lives are very different, we still have the gospel and love for our families in common. We talked all day and could have talked longer. How blessed I am to have had such good roommates and friends.

What We've Been Up To

4th grade Rendezvouse and Utah Program. For the Rendezvouse everyone had to bring 10-20 items to trade. The items couldn't be store bought. Carter made safety pin jewelry, each with a different pattern. They were a big hit!

Isaac LOVES to ride his bike! He taught himself to ride a 2-wheel bike when he was 3. He has insisted on wearing his snow boots so often that I finally put them up where he can't find the them.

Carter earned a superior rating on his solos again this year. He was really nervous and really excited because this was a trophy year. (Superior ratings earn 5 points and it takes 15 points to earn a trophy.) Carter has earned a superior rating each year since he started playing the piano

Terry took Carter and Isaac to the Fireman's Breakfast. They even got to slide down the pole.

Kaitlynn's graduation from high school and the UBATC. The green braid she's wearing is for completing a Health Science Pathway. For those of us on the bleachers, the weather was great. It was windy, but that certainly beat the heat I remember at the other 4 high school graduations. This last weekend she and I attended an orientation at Utah State so there are lots of new adventures ahead for her.

Time Capsule

On February 29, 2000 Davis Elementary 2nd grade tucked away a time capsule. It was a cardboard box taped shut with big letters saying "Open in April of 2010" along with a plea to school staff who might find it to not discard it. Inside the time capsule were class pictures and letters from 200 2nd graders. The letters included what the students wanted to be doing in 10 years. So, the time capsule was finally opened (after being located in a boiler room) and some of Uintah High's senior class got to see what it was they thought they'd want to be doing today.

Kaitlynn was in that 2nd grade group, but didn't even remember the time capsule. Since the opening ceremony, the high school has been trying to locate the students to give them their letters.

For those of you who know Kaitlynn, you know she's never been in the band. I don't recall her even mentioning wanting to be in band. I'm thinking she must have written about being an aunt as this letter was written because she became an aunt on February 17, 2000. What a cutie! Notice her beautiful handwriting. What do you want to be doing in 10 years from now?

Milestones

Believe it or not, it's almost that time of year..... the end of the school year, and for some graduation. Kaitlynn will graduate from Uintah High School and the Uintah Basin Applied Technology College later this month. Wednesday night at the Honors and Awards Program she received an academic gold medallion for having a cumulative GPA of 3.888 (which will actually be higher once her concurrent enrollment college grades come in). She also received a Health Sciences Career Pathway Completion Recognition in Pharmacy. As soon as she graduates from high school (a prerequisite), she'll be taking the national exam for pharmacy technicians and applying for her license. Way to go, Kaitlynn!

My Dad

Like Nephi, I too have been born of goodly parents. The older I get, the more gratiitude I feel for the blessing of goodly parents. My father was a quiet, but powerful influence in my life. When he spoke, I listened. I always knew I was "daddy's little girl". He was there for the good times as well as the difficults ones, even in these last few years.

Christmas Morning

I will never forget the day we were picnicing up in the field behind our house when Mark fell into the hot coals from our fire, landing on his hands. He was probably barely two at the time. Dad picked him up and ran for the house, jumping every fence. The thing that really stands out in my mind about the incident is that Dad always did for each of us what he felt we needed. He and Mom were our greatest advocates.

I live next door to my parents with my 2 brothers' homes just south of theirs and my sister to the east of me. People sometimes ask, "How can you stand to live that close to your family?" The answer: It's easy. We were taught to love and respect one another and to remember that family comes first, and that no "thing" is more important than that. This has been increasingly evidenced as we have taken care of necessary details since Dad's passing.

Dad taught me to be strong and to endure well; lessons I hope I will never forget. He passed away peacefully on March 7. He endured repeated kidney stones all of his adult life which brought about kidney failure after getting cancer. Though he was often in pain, he was not a complainer. Right to the end he said he was doing "great". His longevity was literally a miracle, and I'm grateful for the time we had together. I love him so much and miss him, though I am at peace. I am so grateful for the knowlege that we will meet again and to know that we are part of an eternal family.

Last night when Kaitlynn checked her email there was her acceptance to Utah State University. Even though we knew she would get accepted it was still an exciting moment for her. For those of you who might not know, she is also well on her way to getting her Pharmacy Technician's license, so her senior year of high school has been a busy one.

PInewood Derby

Last night at the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place was a family sweep. Michael, Jared and Carter are all cousins. Carter was so excited all day he could hardly wait until 6 p.m. Last year's car didn't do so well so he was really looking forward to doing better with this year's design and know-how. He took 3rd place and came home with a trophy! Carter also received his Bear badge last night. Way to go!

Last night Carter and I went to see Jon Schmidt in concert. I've seen him twice before, but I had forgotten how much I love to hear him live. As well as being a great musician he's a great entertainer. The only thing I missed was when he invites someone to come and improvise with him on stage. From our seats we couldn't see much of his hands, so during most of the concert I just closed my eyes and listened (it helped to block out the children who kept getting out of their seats). His music is both soothing and exhilarating. Thanks Kaitlynn for offering last minute to stay home with Isaac!

Busy Holidays

As usual, Christmas was a busy but fun time. Carter and Isaac got Nerf guns and Nerf swords and along with Cameron they spent a good part of the day shooting and whacking each other. The boys love it when Cameron plays too. Marissa and Finn spent the week following Christmas with us and Levi joined them on the weekend. We had so much fun really getting to know Finn. Jenna, Ryan and Ava were here for Rachel's wedding but I missed getting pictures. In fact, I couldn't believe that I forgot to take my camera to use after the wedding but I did use Jenna's camera at the luncheon to get some pictures of Jenna and Marissa with Rachel, who by the way was a beautiful bride.

I don't know another 9-year-old boy who gets this excited about name brand clothes. You should have seen him when he discovered the Wii!!!

Isaac likes to crawl behind the couch where it's dark and watch Scooby-Doo movies on the iPod, but this time he was completed exhausted.

Little cousins..... Ellie is just 6 months younger than Finn. She thought his binkie looked interesting, even though she prefers her thumb.

Finn was enjoying feeding himself the corn chowder, but with the next spoonful there was more going down Marissa's arm than in his mouth.

Carter and Isaac had fun entertaining Finn. He thought they were a lot of fun too! We're really gonna miss him.

Ann just had a birthday...... the big 3 0 ! Actually, she looks terrific and she has 3 beautiful children. As the saying goes, she's 30, flirty, and fun!

Real Gingerbread Houses

I finally did it again! I made real gingerbread. I forgot how easy it was to make these miniature houses. Years ago, Marissa's 3rd grade teacher (Mrs. Bailey) let every child do their own little gingerbread house. She asked for parent volunteers to make the gingerbread and cut out the houses in advance so that's how I got the recipe. Kaitlynn was a big help. She and I put the houses together for everyone except Carter and then she helped Kessie by putting the frosting in spots and letting her put the candies on. Isaac and Kessie even ate less candy this year and decorated more.

Isaac says the most interesting prayers. Most nights he prays for our bishop (who is also his uncle). The other night he was more specific, "bless the bishop to do the things he does, and to pass out snacks.... when he wants.... and when people have birthdays." Last night along with "help us not to hit people, or kick them or punch anybody" it was also "bless us to watch good episodes, not bad episodes.... like the Simpsons." (The Simpsons have long been banned at our house so he's never watched it he's only knows it's not allowed.)

First off, anyone who really knows Isaac, knows that he LOVES sugary treats. He's not a good eater, but he sure can down the treats, and too much sugar makes him wild and crazy. Sunday I told Terry that we really needed to make sure that Isaac didn't get any treats because he was on a sugar high from the weekend. So, later in the day he comes out of Primary (4 pm) with 2 candy canes. He downs the first one minutes after we get in the car. On the way home he's thrashing in his car seat and Carter quietly says, "This is why we don't give him sugar." Next Isaac loudly announces as he's kicking his legs and arms and swaying back and forth with his entire body, "THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T GIVE ME SUGAR!"

I don't know about you, but I've been very busy getting ready for Christmas. I have several projects that I'll post about later since I wouldn't want any secrets revealed before the big event.

Since my last post, we've had two almost week-longs visits from Jenna and Ava. Jenna has been home having some dental work done by our trusted family dentist while she still had dental insurance during her "maternity leave". While they were here, Ellie and Ava had a good look at each other. Ellie wanted to kiss Ava, but Ava wasn't too cooperative. It was cute to watch them together. I'm sure they'll have so much fun together in a few years.

We put up our Christmas tree in record time this year......... long before Ann's birthday on the 19th of December. However, my favorite decorations are my tiny nativity sets. Terry brought me a new one today. How sweet is that!

Acupuncture Anyone?

I don't know about you, but I never thought I'd try acupuncture. About 4 years ago I started having pain in my left shoulder. I think from carrying Isaac around. Over the years I've seen a doctor a couple of times for it. In the past, an NSAID, some physical therapy, and plenty of ice would relieve the pain after awhile. Anyway, about 6 months ago the pain started up again, but this time it didn't subside..... no matter what I did. I found that Tylenol and heat were the most helpful, but the pain continued to get worse. The apex of the pain was in the front of my shoulder and continued down to my elbow and then traveled into my hand. I kept increasing the Tylenol (from once a day, to twice a day, then to 3 times a day). It was keeping me awake some nights and even waking me up sometimes. Now mind you, it wasn't a sharp stabbing pain, but a dull aching pain. I don't mean to be complaining, but I just want to give an accurate picture of how I was feeling. Some time ago, I ran across a video that demonstrated acupuncture and it got me thinking about the possibility of having it done. Anyway, long story, short I had a Doctor of Oriental Medicine recommended to me and I finally decided to give it a try. Afterall, I decided it couldn't hurt to try....... of course I was a little worried that it might actually "hurt" to have needles put into me.

Now here's the good news. After 3 treatments my shoulder and entire arm feel great! There was improvement after each treatment. As for the needles......... they don't hurt. The truth is I LOVE to have a treatment. I feel great all over.

I still recommend seeing a Western doctor to make sure there isn't something that needs to be corrected, but if you've tried that without result maybe acupuncture is for you.

Logan Weekend

We spent the Halloween weekend in Logan. Ann, Kaitlynn, Heidi and I took the kids trick or treating in Logan's historical part of Main Street. All of our children and grandchildren were there on Sunday for Ava's blessing, along with Ryan's family. After sacrament meeting we all posed for a family picture (thanks Amanda). I was amazed that everyone was pretty cooperative for that. No one had a baby blanket over their face and no one had a stuffed kitty on their shoulder. Cameron even managed to smile once.

Corn Maze

For about 3 years I've talked about taking the kids and going to the Bluebell Corn Maze, but it never seems to happen. So, today we dropped everything and went. We had a great time and the weather wasn't too bad either. The courtyard has lots of activities for the kids and then there's 2 phases to the maze. I asked Isaac what his favorite thing was and he named everything in the courtyard. In the courtyard there was the apple launcher, the corn cannon, the cow train, the corn shack, feeding goats, the mini maze, slides, and swings as well as hot dogs and snacks. He also liked choosing which direction to go in the maze.

Peaches & Apples

The peaches on our peach tree were just ready to be picked as I was leaving for Logan when Ava was born. Kaitlynn and Terry picked them and put them in the basement where it's cool. When I got home they were pretty ripe so I made jam.... about 50 pints of freezer jam. Now the apples on our 5 trees are ready. I'll be trying out lots of apple recipes again this year. On September 19 our 8th grandchild, Ava Elizabeth was born. Thanks to everyone here at home (especially Terry) I was able to spend several days in Logan playing with Ava.
Terry and the boys drove up with me and spent the night before heading home. When we arrived, Carter and Isaac put on their PJs and washed their hands so they could hold Ava. A little while later, Isaac washed his hands again and then asked Jenna if he could "pet the baby." He was so cute with her.

With Cameron's help, Heidi took these darling pictures of the girls. I just had to share them. Aren't they adorable!

Heidi took some fun senior pictures for Kaitlynn. During the photo shoot, Heidi told her to "do something with your hands". This first picture is the result of that. A few weeks later Heidi did the pictures for the Sadie's Dance. The theme was "Sadie Goes Hunting" which Kait thought was lame, but the day was fun anyway.

Like a lot of you, we took the traditional first-day-of-school pictures. Isaac is in a second year of preschool, Carter is in 4th grade, and Kaitlynn is a senior. As you can see, Carter also got braces this summer. Not that we think 9 year olds need straight teeth, but it's to correct a problem that might have cost him a permanent tooth.

I remodeled our bedroom. I should have taken a before and after picture. The walls used to be teal green. Ann came home for lunch one afternoon after I had just finished painting the top half of the walls. Well, you can imagine the combination of the old and new colors along side each other. I believe Ann's comment was, "Mom, have you lost your mind?" Sometimes I quietly ask myself that same question in the middle of a painting project, but I just keep reminding myself that I have to wait to see the final outcome. I also picked out new carpet, bedding, and light fixtures. In the end, I was really pleased with the outcome... and so was Terry. He's always good to let me do what I want in the house when it comes to colors.

We had "Cousin Camp" this year. I was so busy running the camp that I forgot to take pictures. I found this one picture taken during crafts. You can't see Heidi, but she's teaching the girls how to make necklaces out of string licorice, cereal straws and gummy savers.

Brooklynn had a birthday. She turned 6 in August. She told Ann she wanted a pink guitar for her birthday. I'm not sure why she asked for pink because blue is her favorite color. Notice the cast.... she wanted it blue but they were all out of blue at the hospital. She also started kindergarten in September.

Carter earned a gold medal in 3rd grade. This was an award that he worked on all year. There was a list of 17 requirements for the gold medal and each student had to complete 15 of the 17. It included things like a 2-hour service project, reading 400 or more minutes a month (outside of school), complete 4 book related projects, score 100% on 12 spelling tests, 80% mastery on all science tests, mastery of multiplications facts to 100, 6 or fewer absences or tardies. The final week of school Carter needed to score 80% on his final science test. His teacher always gave the test and then an opportunity to improve your score, but that final week she didn't so Carter was pretty excited when he only missed 1 question on the test.

Isaac's birthday

Isaac turned 4 on July 20. He asked for a Spiderman birthday cake. We made sheet cake brownies (one of his favs) and used a kit from the bakery. He is so enthusiastic about everything and his birthday was no different. He loved opening presents throughout the day. Kairi and Kessie gave him a shirt and glow-in-the-dark stars and planets. It was really cute; Kairi took him down to his bedroom and promptly helped him put them up on the wall next to his bed. At bedtime he was so excited to see them glow. After dinner we had birthday cake and he loved that he got to blow out the candles first. Throughout the day he loved it when we sang "Happy Birthday". It was definitely his day!

I finally found my camera. Not at all where I thought I would....... but FINALLY I came across it. I had left it in the console of the car. I remember taking it with us somewhere, thinking I might want to take some pictures, but I didn't. When we got home I left it in the car and then totally forgot that I left it there. Those of you who know me well, know that this is soooo like me. Now if I can just find the CD with my Palmyra pictures that I thought I would find with the camera.

I've been wanting to post a few things; but alas, my camera is missing. It still contains pictures of Isaac's birthday (July 20). Last week I painted our bedroom. I cleared everything (except the bed and dresser) out of the room and everything is still in the family room in the basement because we're getting new carpet tomorrow. I'm sure the camera is somewhere down there, but I just don't seem to have the energy to find it. I hope it shows up tomorrow when everything goes back in place.

Baseball Fever

Terry is a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox. Recently he flew to Boston with his brother Corey to see a Red Sox game. They toured Fenway Park during batting practice and then watched the game against the Toronto Blue Jays. He brought home miniature Red Sox bats for the boys and Boston shirts.

Carter has been playing baseball in the minor league (kid pitch) this year. He has been having a great time. The family spends two nights a week at the ballpark. This is Carter's first year playing, but he seems to have a natural ability. He has pitched in a couple of games. Sometimes he plays shortstop or 3rd base, but is mostly considered the catcher. He has great coaches who have given him a lot of good opportunities and are teaching the boys that playing baseball is about having fun and being good sports.

Last weekend was Kaitlynn's Jr. Prom. She got up early for Promenade practice almost every school day for 2 weeks and then helped decorate the gym on Friday. As usual there were lots of pretty dresses at Promenade and the decorations were outstanding. Of course, Kaitlynn was the most beautiful. Some of the afternoon activities were cancelled because of wind and rain, but overall it was a fun day.

Easter Festivities

Like many of you, the Easter bunny visited our home on Friday night. Carter was hoping his basket would be hidden in a really difficult to find place. I think he got his wish, so did Kait though I'm not sure that was her wish. The Easter bunny is challenged at our house by having to put baskets out of the reach of our dog, Bailey. Regardless of what you might read about dogs and chocolate, Bailey loves chocolate and can sniff it out anywhere. He has been known to eat chocolate oranges wrapped under the Christmas tree and is still alive and well.

Carter, with his recently new found knowledge asked me, "Where would the Easter bunny stay?" "Well," I replied, "Bunnies live in cages. That doesn't seem too likely. Santa lives at the North Pole. I don't know. What do you think?" Any answers? Isaac in is wisdom keeps asking me, "Does the Easter bunny have his costume on?"

Thursday we colored Easter eggs. I remember doing this years ago when Cameron and Ann were little (probably 3 & 2 years old). I was excited about letting them do it and later wondered if I even considered the mess they would most likely make. Ann was wearing a dress with a white yoke; and, yes, she spilled yellow egg coloring all over her dress. As I recall, we didn't fuss too much about it but just enjoyed what we were doing........ and, the dress washed up just fine.

So now here I am many years later with much egg coloring wisdom. You'll notice from the pictures that the entire table is covered with newspapers and little people are only allowed one color at a time; that of course, reduces the number of spills and makes the activity last longer. I am happy to report..... there were no spills but lots of happy faces!

Conference & Family

Sunday afternoon Cameron, Heidi and their girls joined us for dinner and the last session of General Conference. Kairi was concerned that Grandma wouldn't have bingo cards but she was assured that I would. As much as I don't like candy these days (Isaac gets way TOO much) we did play bingo with M&Ms and treats for winners. Cameron of course was helpful with his wide interpretation of the bingo words so there were more winners. Conference was really good, at least the part I got to listen to. Thank goodness for lds.org and the Ensign.

March 15th..... 18 and all grown up. Well, almost!

This was the only picture I got of Kait on her birthday. She has a busy life. Her birthday was on a Sunday this year.... right in the middle of the high school musical of which she has been head technical director for. She is also doing a 2-hour internship at the hospital pharmacy each school day, as well as working part time at West End Cleaners. Along with everything else she still manages to squeeze in terrific grades and time with friends. Did I mention she's a really terrific person!!! We love her a lot!

Today is a celebration!!! Forty-seven years ago I was in a Salt Lake hospital with life threatening complications from appendicitis. My mother sat by my bed and never left me for days even though she had just suffered a miscarriage. My brothers were in Vernal with my grandparents and my dad was a patient in the same hospital. You might ask why today is a celebration. It's simple..... I am alive and well. This holiday always causes me to reflect on how much I have to be grateful for, most of all LIFE!

Piano Duet

Today was the Federation Piano Duet Festival. Carter and his duet partner, Brant have been playing the piano for just 2 years. They have played together in the duet festival twice. After lots and lots and lots of practice they received a superior!!!!

Ann's Mexico Trip

Yesterday was Uintah High's Sweetheart Dance. Have you recently tried to find a semi-formal dress in Vernal? Kaitlynn and I looked at every store in town that carries dresses (excluding formal wear shops) and still came up empty handed. Thank goodness for online shopping! Kaitlynn looked beautiful right down to the strappy dress sandals that killed her feet, but looked great. Ah, the things we do for beauty.

Let It Snow........

For those of you who don't live in Vernal..... Monday we had an old fashion snow storm. The snow was wet and heavy; the kind that's good for playing in. Of course, if you had to drive in it-- not so much fun.

When Kaitlynn went to warm up her car that was parked on our covered driveway she discovered that her doors were frozen shut. With the aid of a hairdryer and little hip action she was finally able to get inside the car. The next thing I know, she's back in the house informing me that she's stuck in the driveway. I was still in my PJs and trying to figure out how to get her to school on time when a friend of hers that lives just up the road from us was headed to school. He saw her dilemma and quickly came to her aid. He was going to help her get the car unstuck but then she just suggested he give her a ride to school and they were on their way. Later in the day we both discussed that it was a tender mercy in her behalf as she has had very little experience driving in the snow.

Needless to say, some people got to work late, some stores even opened late, and a lot of kids were late for school; some even had buses that didn't arrive. Since there was a winter storm warning in effect for most of the day, the schools decided to send the kids home after lunch. In the 24 years that I've had kids in school, I can only recall one other snow day. I stepped outside early in the day to take these pictures, then I grabbed a yardstick and measured..... 9 inches and still snowing. This was definitely a storm to remember!!!

Ann's Birthday

We celebrated Ann's birthday on Thursday, December 18... the day before her birthday since she had the day off work. Cameron & Heidi and all the kids were here. We decorated gingerbread houses. All of the kids had their own. I put the houses together with hot glue the night before so the kids could have free reign with decorating. Years ago we used to do gingerbread houses for Ann's birthday, but we hadn't done that for a long time. Back then I used to make real gingerbread and royal frosting. We would cut out miniature houses and the kids would put them together and decorate. I had some requests for real gingerbread this year, but it was graham crackers or nothing. The last few years I've been wanting to make real gingerbread houses. I even bought the molasses, but I never seem to find the time. Graham crackers or gingerbread..... I think we had just as much fun. Ann unwrapped her gifts, we had dinner together and Annie's favorite cake (angelfood with a frosting made from melted Hersey bars & marshmellows and whipped cream). The kids all got along really well (though the volume was a little loud) and we all had a great time together!!!

Baby Blessing

We were recently in Salt Lake with Marissa and Levi for Finn's baby blessing. While I had the entire family together I thought it was a great opportunity to get a quick picture of all of us. Now, mind you, this is not a professional picture but it is a record of our entire brood until March when Cameron & Heidi will add one more granddaughter for us. After church we all enjoyed dinner with Levi's family at Grandma & Grandpa Bigler's home. We always enjoy spending time with Levi's family; and Finn, of course was the star attraction.

"It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas"

Tonight we finally decorated the Christmas tree. We're actually ahead of schedule..... Ann's birthday isn't until Friday and my goal is always to have the tree up before her birthday. Carter was so excited he could hardly contain himself and Isaac quickly got into the spirit of it too. Kaitlynn supervised.... and did some rearranging. Carter wanted me to stand under the mistletoe, but then he would pretend that he didn't want to get caught. Last year Isaac spent the entire holiday redecorating the tree, and I'm fairly confident that he will this year as well.

Gingerbread House

Isaac's preschool class made gingerbread houses. His teacher informed me that he did more eating than decorating. No surprise here. If you know Isaac, you know he LOVES candy. He even asks for it for breakfast. So..... by the end of the day, there were only graham crackers standing.

Cub Scout

Last night Carter received his Cub Scout Wolf badge. He also received a gold arrow point and 2 silver ones, and has numerous belt loops. He has been fortunate to have really great leaders. In fact, you can see one of his leaders, Heather Moulton in the picture. Her son Jared (Carter's favorite cousin) received his Wolf badge too.

Polar Express

Tuesday we took a ride on the Polar Express via the Heber Valley Railroad. After boarding in Heber, we headed for the North Pole. We were entertained by elves who passed out cookies and hot cocoa and told silly jokes. We all sang Christmas songs and read the story of the Polar Express. Mrs. Claus even shared her cookie recipe with us. When we arrived at the North Pole, Santa boarded the train and talked with every child. Isaac told Santa he wants "big, huge gum; big, huge candy; and big, huge presents as he held out his arms so Santa would make no mistake as to the amounts requested. Santa left each child with a bell.... so they will not forget.

Thanksgiving Weekend

Everyone was home for Thanksgiving! We enjoyed dinner at our house with lots of my extended family. Throughout the holiday we all did our best to spoil Finn. He's a very happy baby! Ann had to be at Radio Shack bright and early on Friday morning where she put in a 12-hour shift but made really great commissions thanks to all those crazy Black Friday shoppers. Terry took Carter and Isaac, and along with his brother Corey and his family enjoyed some of the Holly Days activities. They brought home "roasted chestnuts" to share a taste with the rest of us. I'd have to say they were some of the most repugnant things I've ever eaten. Saturday, back in Logan, Ryan took his final exams for his private pilot's license and Jenna reported to us.... he passed! He's even talking about flying home for Christmas, reminding Jenna how much faster the trip will be. If you know Jenna, you know she's not fond of flying.......so, we'll see.

Federation

Carter played the piano on Friday at the Federation solo competition. He was nervous because he really wanted a superior rating. He was well prepared, and..... hooray.... he received a Superior!!!!!
